How do I stream without OBS?
OBS is popular, but it’s just an encoder — software that turns your scene into an RTMP stream. Plenty of people find it heavy, fiddly, or too much for a simple “camera and go”. The good news: nothing about going live actually requires OBS. Here are the ways to stream without it and still reach every platform.
OBS is only an encoder — you have options
Anything that can publish over RTMP, RTSP or SRT can be your source. That includes hardware encoders (a Blackmagic ATEM Mini, a standalone box), a phone with a free RTMP camera app, a webcam or IP camera with built-in RTMP, and lighter desktop apps than OBS.
The platform on the other end doesn’t care what produced the stream — it just wants a clean RTMP feed and a key. So the real question isn’t “OBS or nothing”, it’s “which encoder suits how I want to go live”.
Send one feed, reach every platform
Whatever encoder you pick, point it at a restreaming service instead of a single platform. You publish once; the service relays a copy to Twitch, YouTube, Kick, Facebook or any custom endpoint from its own servers — so you never re-upload per platform, OBS or not.
- Grab your ingest URL and key from the dashboard.
- Enter them into your encoder (hardware, phone app, or camera).
- Add the platforms you want to go out to — done.
Or go live with no encoder at all
Stream Repeater’s free Local Agent can broadcast for you with nothing else installed. It renders your Stream Games scene and can pull in a 3D-printer or IP camera, then pushes that straight to your channel — headless, no OBS window to manage.
It even has a Talk button that puts your microphone on air live over the broadcast, ducking the background music under your voice, so a no-OBS stream still has a host.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need OBS to multistream?
No. Any encoder that outputs RTMP/RTSP/SRT works — a hardware encoder, a phone app, or a camera’s built-in RTMP — and Stream Repeater fans that single feed out to every platform.
Can I go live without any encoder software?
Yes. The free Local Agent can broadcast your Stream Games scene and a connected camera headless, with a built-in Talk button for your microphone.
Will the quality be worse without OBS?
No. Quality depends on your encoder’s settings, not on OBS specifically, and Stream Repeater relays copy-first — it doesn’t re-encode, so nothing is degraded in the relay.
